How to fill out an I-9 on iPhone

Updated October 23, 2026

You can type Section 1 of Form I-9 on your iPhone, but you can’t finish it there. USCIS says the fillable I-9 “must print and manually sign it,” so fill it in on your phone, print it, and sign and date it in ink. If your employer sent you a link to its own onboarding or e-I-9 system, use that instead. This guide covers the blank PDF from uscis.gov.

What USCIS says about signing

From the USCIS Form I-9 page:

“Form I-9 is a fillable form, which means you can type your answers directly into the form, except for the signature blocks. Employers and employees using this fillable form must print and manually sign it rather than typing or electronically affixing a signature because this fillable form does not meet DHS standards for electronic Form I-9 generation, storage and retention systems.”

So on a phone:

  • You can: download the form, type every Section 1 field, check your attestation box, save it, and print it.
  • You can’t: sign it with Markup, a typed name, or any signing app, and send that as your finished I-9. A drawn signature on this PDF doesn’t meet the rule above, whatever app you use.

Employers can use electronic signatures only in an electronic I-9 system that meets DHS standards. USCIS’s Handbook for Employers, section 10.1 lists the requirements, such as creating “a record verifying the identity of the person producing the signature.” That’s your employer’s system to provide, not something you set up on your phone.

Get the right form

  • Current edition: USCIS lists the edition date as 01/20/25. It’s printed at the bottom of each page (“Form I-9 Edition 01/20/25”), and the top of page 1 shows “Expires 05/31/2027.”
  • Opening it on iPhone: USCIS says that on an Apple device, tapping the form link shows a view that “is NOT fillable.” Save the PDF to Files first, then open it from Files or the Preview app.

Fill out Section 1 on your iPhone

  1. In Safari, go to uscis.gov/i-9 and tap Form I-9 under Forms and Document Downloads. When the PDF opens, tap Share, then Save to Files.
  2. Open the file from Files or the Preview app and tap the Markup button.
  3. Tap a field, then enter information. You may see AutoFill suggestions above the keyboard. Check anything AutoFill enters, because your legal name has to be exact.
  4. Name fields: the instructions say to enter “your current legal name and any last names you previously used, including any hyphens or punctuation.” If you have only one name, enter it as your Last Name and type “Unknown” in First Name.
  5. Address and date of birth: “All employees must provide their current legal name, complete address, and date of birth. If other fields do not apply, leave them blank.”
  6. Social Security number: the field takes 9 digits. Providing it “is voluntary, unless your employer participates in E-Verify.” The instructions also say: “Do not enter an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) as your Social Security number.”
  7. Citizenship or immigration status: “You must select one box.” If you check box 4, enter one of: a USCIS Number/A-Number, a Form I-94 Admission Number, or a foreign passport number with the country of issuance.
  8. Leave Signature of Employee and Today’s Date empty. You’ll fill these in by hand after printing.
  9. Tap Done. If you’re asked to save a copy, tap Save, then reopen the file to check your entries are still there.

Fill PDF forms on your iPhone with Easy Scan & Sign (coming soon)

Type into PDF form fields and keep the file on your phone. No account. For Form I-9, you still print and sign by hand.

Download on the App Store
  1. Open the filled PDF in the Preview app.
  2. Tap next to the filename, then tap Print.
  3. Select a printer, then print.
  4. On the paper copy, sign Section 1 and write today’s date. The instructions say: “Do NOT back-date this field.”

No printer? Save the filled PDF and print it later from any computer, or ask your employer for a paper form. Check that the edition date and page numbers print at the bottom of every page. USCIS gives that advice for printed forms it receives, and it’s a sensible check here too.

What happens next

  • Deadline for Section 1: “Employees must complete and sign Section 1 of Form I-9 no later than the first day of employment, but not before accepting a job offer.”
  • Your documents: within three business days of your first day, you “must present to your employer original, acceptable, and unexpired documentation.” You choose which documents to present from the Lists of Acceptable Documents.
  • Section 2 is your employer’s job. Don’t fill in anything below Section 1.
  • If someone helped you: a preparer or translator “must complete a Certification area on Supplement A.”
